马丁.韦默尔将现代绘画历史上明显对立的趣味相互桥接,早期现代主义绘画在19世纪中期至末期发展过程中的一个核心动机是以更加直接的方式回应即时的周遭环境和刻画当下的社会现实。此后,在20世纪初期,当抽象主义开始出现,被表现之物逐渐消失,二维画布的平面感自我指涉地得到公认,并被看待为一个首要的问题。抽象表现主义以及相关的奥普艺术(Op Art)和色场绘画运动(Colour Field Painting), 则以在場作品直接的物质性激起与观者之间的感受性,以及以绘画行动可以生发出对现象学意义上作出的回应,来将此关注延续了下去。韦默尔在其作品中专注于处理这两个截然不同的议题——把通过观察产生的表现来对物理世界作出回应,以及相反地,为了得到一种仅仅向自我指涉的绘画艺术而将刻画对象彻底移除——仔细推敲这两个对立的端点之间可以发生些什么。
Martin Wehmer Bridges the apparently opposing interests in the history of modern painting. Acore motivation of early modernist painting in its development from the middleto the end of the 19th century was to respond in a more direct way to theimmediate surroundings and depict the current social reality. Then, in the early 20th century, when abstraction began to emerge and what was represented gradually disappeared, the flatness of the two-dimensional canvas wasrecognized as a self-referential problem. Abstract expressionism, as well asrelated Op Art and Colour Field Painting, continued this concern by arousingthe sensibility between the audience and the immediate materiality of the workson the spot, and by responding to the phenomenological sense through the actionof Painting. Martin Wehmer in its work focused on the two very different issues- the generation by observing the performance of the to respond to the physical world, and on the contrary, in order to get a kind of just to theself-reference painting art to depict objects thoroughly remove - close scrutinyof these two opposing what can happen between the endpoints.
