Chen Xiaoguo (b. 1990, Zhongxiang, Hubei Province) received his bachelor’s degree from the Sculpture Department of Hubei Institute of Fine Arts and his master’s degree from the School of Experimental Art at the Central Academy of Fine Arts.
Chen's training in sculpture and experimental art has shaped a heightened sensitivity to scale, space, and the relationships between materials. He regards painting as an action that unfolds through the act of looking. Beginning with fragments of everyday visual culture, his practice does more than expose the complicity between media logics and image producers. By selecting, cropping, and translating images, he unsettles the identities, hierarchies, and meanings imposed upon them by established modes of perception.
For Chen, across portraiture and landscape, the elevated and the ordinary no longer constitute opposing orders of value. Bright yet ambiguous hues open the image to the gaze while resisting immediate possession, allowing each subject to reveal its irreducible difference within a shared formal field. Chen seeks to construct a human atlas without fixed boundaries. Painting becomes both a rumination on the existing image regime and a means of redistributing the power of looking: rather than prescribing meaning for life, it allows different faces, experiences, and conditions to appear on equal visual terms.
